Dig a hole for a fence post anywhere south of the Canadian River and you’ll meet it: a pale, chalky layer that turns a shovel into a pry bar. That’s caliche, and it explains more about how trees grow in Amarillo than anything else in the yard. The tree that’s lifting your driveway, the elm that leaned in April, the leaves that turned yellow in July, and the stump that couldn’t be ground as deep as you wanted all trace back to the same layer of ground.
What caliche is and where it sits
Caliche is calcium carbonate, essentially natural chalk or lime, that has cemented itself into the soil. It forms in dry climates. In a wetter place, rain washes dissolved minerals down and out of the root zone. In the Panhandle, with the National Weather Service describing around 19.71 inches of precipitation a year and air that occasionally drops below 15 percent humidity, water evaporates before it can carry the minerals away, and over a very long time they accumulate into a hard layer.
That layer sits at shallow depth across much of Potter and Randall County. How shallow varies from lot to lot: it’s often within a few feet of the surface, sometimes close enough that a sprinkler trench finds it. It can be a solid slab, a crumbly band, or nodules mixed through the soil. Older Amarillo in Potter County, the newer developments south into Randall County, Canyon, and the acreage around Bushland all sit on some version of it. You don’t need the exact depth in your yard to manage trees over it. What matters is that there’s a floor, and everything the tree does happens above it.
How caliche shapes roots
Tree roots follow water and oxygen, and they go where the ground lets them. Above a hard, poorly drained layer, that’s sideways.
Wide, flat root plates. A mature tree over caliche builds a root system shaped like a dinner plate rather than a carrot. Most of its anchoring and most of its feeding roots are in the top couple of feet of soil, spread out well past the drip line. That’s a stable arrangement in normal conditions and a surprisingly fragile one in a spring front when the top of the soil is saturated and the canopy is in full leaf. The tree can rotate on that plate and lever out of the ground with the roots still attached. It’s the whole-tree failure the storm walk-around spends the most time on.
Surface roots. Because roots are shallow to begin with, they don’t need much encouragement to break the surface. Lawns around mature elms and cottonwoods commonly have roots you can trip on. Sidewalks, driveways, and patio slabs get lifted and cracked because the roots growing under them have nowhere else to go.
Girdling roots. A root that can’t go down will sometimes circle. When it circles the trunk, it can slowly strangle the tree as both thicken. A root wrapping tightly across the root flare, with the trunk swelling above it and flat or pinched below it, is worth showing to an arborist.
Root cutting is riskier here. With most of the anchoring in a shallow plate, cutting a large root on one side of a tree to fix a driveway or lay a patio removes a bigger share of the tree’s stability than the same cut would in deep soil. It’s one of the reasons the trench-for-a-patio decision deserves a look at the tree first.
Watering above caliche
The instinct in a dry climate is to water often. Over caliche, that’s the wrong instinct.
A short daily sprinkler run wets the top inch or two of soil and evaporates by afternoon. The roots that get watered are the ones right at the surface, so that’s where the tree keeps them. You end up with a tree that’s trained to be shallow and that suffers the moment the sprinklers stop.
A long, slow soak does the opposite. Run a hose at a trickle, or a soaker hose, around the drip line for hours, so the water moves down through the whole root zone. Then leave it alone until the soil is dry several inches down. That encourages the roots to use the full depth of soil that’s available above the hardpan and gives the tree a buffer for the dry, windy weeks that are normal here.
One caution: above a layer that drains poorly, it’s possible to overdo a deep soak and leave the root zone sitting in water, which suffocates roots just as surely as drought kills them. Let the soil dry between soaks.
Which trees cope
Some species were built for this ground, and some were planted here anyway.
Mesquite. At home on the fringes of the city and in the Canyon breaks. It handles the drought, the alkalinity, and the hardpan without complaint.
Honey locust. Tolerates dry, alkaline soil well and casts a light shade that lets grass grow underneath. One of the better choices for a new tree in Amarillo.
Hackberry. Tough, drought-tolerant, and comfortable on alkaline soil. Not glamorous, but it reliably becomes a real shade tree here.
Austrian pine. Widely planted for its tolerance of dryness and alkaline conditions. The main things to watch are dieback at the top and the tendency to drop a weakened leader in wind.
Siberian elm. The tree Wolflin and the other older neighborhoods are known for. It copes with everything the Panhandle throws at it, which is why it was planted so widely. The trade-off is brittle wood that sheds big limbs, especially in the spring fronts. It’s not a tree to plant now, but it’s a tree worth keeping and maintaining if you’ve inherited a mature one.
Cottonwood. Common on Bushland acreage and along the draws. Cottonwoods want a lot more water than falls here, and where they aren’t on a creek or a leaky irrigation line, they grow fast, hollow early, and fail at old wounds. A cottonwood in a suburban yard with no water source is a tree to keep an eye on.
Chlorosis on high-pH soils
Caliche makes soil alkaline, and alkaline soil creates a specific problem that shows up all over Amarillo in summer: leaves that turn yellow while the veins stay green. That pattern is commonly iron chlorosis.
The iron is usually present in the soil. The high pH just keeps the tree from taking it up. Some species are far more prone to it than others, and a tree that’s been chlorotic for years will often show thinning at the top, small leaves, and dieback at the branch tips, because it’s been running short on the chemistry it needs for photosynthesis.
If you’re seeing it, get the diagnosis confirmed before treating anything, since root damage and overwatering can produce a similar yellowing. An ISA Certified Arborist or the county extension office can look at the leaf pattern, the species, and the site and tell you whether it’s chlorosis. Treatments exist; which one suits your tree depends on its size, species, and how far along the problem is, and that’s a conversation for someone standing in front of it.
Planting over caliche
If you’re putting in a new tree, the hardpan changes how you should dig.
Dig wide, not deep. The roots are going to spread sideways anyway, so give them a head start. A planting hole two or three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the root ball itself lets the roots move out into loosened soil.
Don’t plant in a bathtub. This is the mistake that kills more new trees here than drought does. If you dig a neat hole down to the caliche and fill it with good soil, you’ve made a bucket with a hard floor. Water goes in and can’t get out, the roots sit in it, and the tree drowns in a place that gets under twenty inches of rain a year. Before planting, check that the hole drains: fill it with water and see whether it’s gone in a reasonable time. If it isn’t, break through the pan at the bottom with a digging bar, or pick a different spot.
Keep the root flare at grade. The place where the trunk widens into the roots should sit at or slightly above the surrounding soil, not buried. Over poorly drained ground, planting a little high is safer than a little low.
Mulch, and water deeply from the start. A wide ring of mulch, pulled back from the trunk, keeps the shallow root zone cooler and moister. Then water on the slow-soak schedule described above so the new roots learn to go as deep as the ground allows.
Stump grinding above caliche
When a tree comes out, the stump has to be dealt with, and caliche shapes that job too.
A stump grinder chews the stump down below grade with a spinning cutter wheel. In deep soil, a crew can take the stump and its main roots down far enough to plant grass or even another tree in the same spot. Above caliche, the grinder may hit the hardpan before it gets as deep as you’d like, and grinding into caliche is hard on the equipment and slow. The result is that the practical depth is sometimes set by the ground rather than by the machine.
That’s worth knowing when you compare quotes. Ask the provider how deep they expect to grind on your lot and what happens if they hit the layer. Ask whether the surface roots that have been lifting the sidewalk are included, since those are shallow and often can be chased. And ask whether the chips are left to fill the hole or hauled off.

One more thing the ground here affects: the house.

A large tree’s root zone near a slab is part of the moisture picture under that slab, drawing water out in dry spells and competing with the soil for what’s there.
